25 essential ports to have in your iOS collection
Updated December 16, 2020: List entries tweaked
Thankfully, the App Store does not have a problem with original content. Hundreds of fresh, bespoke games are deposited onto our iPhones and iPads ever month.
That's why we're quite sanguine about the fact that there's also a thriving market for ports and conversions of existing console and PC games. It just means that we get the best of both (or rather all) worlds.
It used to be that people would grumble about the prospect of a mobile conversion. Smartphones weren't powerful enough, their screens weren't big enough, and the games simply weren't suitable for touchscreen controls.
All of those concerns have gone out of the window now. Smartphone processors are ridiculously capable, display sizes (and resolutions) have ballooned, and it's easier than ever to hook up a wireless joypad to your iPhone.
That's why we haven't just included the following console and PC conversions because they were great games in their original iteration. We've done so because they play great on iOS.
FTL: Faster Than Light
An easy-breezy port from PC to tablet, this. Its retro art and rich, sandbox nature makes it a favourite in plenty of people's book, and the controls and ease of use between PC and mobile makes porting look a cinch.
Hearthstone
Hearthstone is one of the greatest card battlers of all time, and one of the best examples of free to play, too. And it's all coated in that delicious Blizzard polish. Lovely.
Dead Cells
Has there been a better roguelite platformer than Dead Cells since the launch of the imperious Spelunky? I don't think so. This wonderful game sparkles thanks to a limber combat system and a dizzying arsenal of ranged and melee weaponry.
GRID Autosport
There are plenty of brilliant mobile racers that justifiably claim to be console quality, but none have delivered the real thing to the extent of GRID Autosport. It's a deep, technically astonishing slab of premium racing action.
Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Old Republic is one of the finest RPGs ever made. It lets you inhabit the cloak of a flippin' Jedi Knight, for goodness sake. But what's most remarkable is that it works so well on iOS.
Bad North
We always suspected that Bad North, one of the finest strategy games of recent years, would play well on mobile. The way it distils the real time strategy genre into a touch-friendly format makes this backs-to-the-wall Norse epic feel like an iOS native.
Papers, Please
Papers, Please puts you in the shoes of a border control agent in a fictional communist state called Arstotzka. You have to study passports, read entry rules, and make sure no troublemakers get in. It sounds dull, but the human stories and branching narrative mean it's one of the most engrossing games on mobile. Get it played.
XCOM: Enemy Within
The new XCOM titles are well good. There's strategy and tactics and guns and aliens and spaceships and oh my god they're so good I'm gonna go play them right now - and so should you!
The Witness
Jonathan Blow's first person puzzler masterpiece took a long time to come to iOS, but was easily worth the wait. Hiking around the beautiful island might be better suited to PC and console, but the game's line-drawing puzzles play best on mobile. Drmare tidal music converter 1 1 0 m.
Football Manager 2020 Touch
Football Manager 2020 Touch offers a like-for like experience with the equivalent PC mode, but with refined touch controls. It's a dauntingly deep management sim that's unrivalled on mobile.
7 Billion Humans
7 Billion Humans is a game that actually teaches you something as you play. It's a clever puzzle game that essentially has you programming in solutions. Thank goodness it's so very charming, or your brain might melt under the strain.
Reventure
Far smarter than its simplistic 8-bit platformer trappings would have you believe, Reventure gives you a semi-open world to explore and 100 ingenious ways to meet your end. It's a proper pocket adventure.
Hyper Light Drifter
Take a classic top-down Zelda template, imbue it with intense levels of twitchy combat, and slap it with a stunning neon-drenched aesthetic. You're half way to to describing Hyper Light Drifter, which works surprisingly well on mobile.
Journey
Play Free Games On Computer
One of the most moving in downright beautiful games of recent years has made the unexpected hop to mobile, and it's as lovely as ever. Journey is a multiplayer adventure that pretty much anyone can play and enjoy.
Rogue Legacy
Rogue Legacy a genuine classic of the roguelike platformer genre, offering endless replayability with its procedurally generated levels and ingenious lineal character generation system.
Gwent: The Witcher Card Game
Those waiting for a Witcher 3 conversion will have to keep on dreaming. But until that happens, you can play the brilliant strategy card game from that beloved RPG on your iOS device.
Cultist Simulator
Cultist Simulator is tough to pin down. It's a narrative card game with elements of strategy and deck building, and a massive does of trial and error. https://hill-torrent.medium.com/autocad-free-download-for-mac-3e3a8c94c7fe. The only thing that's plain to see in this enigma of a game is the quality of its iOS conversion.
Severed
Los sims 4 tablet. Coming to iOS just three months after its PS Vita debut, Severed finds itself perfectly at home on mobile. The surreal story and Myst-like first-person adventuring remains, but it actually feels like an improvement when experienced on an Apple device.
Inside
Playdead's stunning follow-up to Limbo bests its predecessor in virtually every way, from its grimly beautiful world to its seamless blend of puzzles and wordless narrative. Inside's slow pace ensures that this is platformer that works well on mobile, too. Fortnite 2011 download.
Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap
Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is a stunning remake of a forgotten 8-bit platformer classic, brought bang up to date with beautifully sharp cartoon graphics. We're very glad it's made it way to mobile.
Bomb Chicken
Bomb Chicken reverses the usual order of things - it's a Nitrome game that started on console before making its way to mobile. It's still a splendid little platform-puzzler, in which you control a chicken who lays bombs to ascend to higher levels. And to blow stuff up, naturally.
Best Adult Ipad Games
Invisible, Inc.
Turn-based strategy meets stealth in this slick sci-fi crime caper. Invisible Inc's tense procedurally generated missions and stylish isometric visuals really sing on mobile. Create ios games on windows.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
It would be inaccurate to say that we've been waiting for a Castlevania: Symphony of the Night conversion since the first iPhone, because it landed 10 years prior to that. But we're incredibly glad Konami finally got around to it, because this is the game that put the 'vania' into 'Metroidvania'. Seminal barely covers it.
SteamWorld Heist
Play Ipad Games On Pc
SteamWorld Heist was always a more intuitive take on squad-based battling, thanks to its side-on perspective and light-hearted steampunk presentation. Its move to mobile was written in the stars.
Gris
Gris isn't the freshest game on this list. Mechanically, it's quite a by-the-book platform-puzzler. But by goodness it looks stunning, and its simple mechanics actually make it ideal for mobile.
